Mrs. Goyette
 October News from Room 159

Dear Families,

Welcome to the wonderful world of second grade! My name is Tina Goyette and I will be your child’s teacher this year. This will be my 21st year of teaching. I’m excited to start a new year with your child! This year will mean new learning experiences and friends for your child.  My goal is to help your child develop academic achievement, confidence, independence and caring towards others.

Reading: We use Reading Street Core Program. Students receive whole group instruction and then have group practice time to read and write at their level, while I provide instruction to small groups. We will spend our first weeks working on learning the behaviors of independent work and fostering our classroom community. Spelling word lists will be sent home which coincide with the phonics lesson of the week, so you can reinforce the taught skill. Fluency practice will be a weekly homework assignment. Reading with fluency is necessary for comprehension. More information on fluency to follow.

Writing: With the Framing Your Thoughts Sentence Structure program students will learn to write thoughtful and creative sentences. Students will also write opinion, narrative, and informative/expository paragraphs, friendly letters and poems.

Math: We use EnVision Math across the district. This program meets the Common Core State Standards. Concepts are mastered through the use of manipulatives, pictures and then numerical form, Addition and subtraction facts will be practiced throughout the year to help increase speed and accuracy.

Science: Units of study include: Engineering Design, Earth Science, States of Matter, and Living Things.

Social Studies: Topics include: Our Community, Economics, Geography and Timelines.

Behavior: District wide we use the Positive Behavior Intervention System.  At Russell Elementary we give a H.O.O.T. by helping others, ourselves and the school. We emphasize and recognize good behaviors. Students will be coming home with a behavior contract of our rules, rewards and consequences for you to review with them.

Snack: Please send in a healthy nut free snack to be shared with the class. Ideas: graham crackers, granola, Cherrios, Goldfish, Cheez-its

I would like to use Scholastic News. We will read science and social studies nonfiction that gives practice with reading skills. The cost is $5.00 per student. Please send in cash.  If this is a hardship let me know.

I look forward to working with you to help your child learn and grow this year. If any questions or concerns arise, call (413)642-7130 or email t.goyette@schoolsofwestfield.org.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tina Goyette
